Drawings such as these by Katharine Bagaley were used by her Mother to teach the children to read. My Mother, Joan Thomas was one of those children. She remembers the funny characters and has pronounced the consonants to me on many an occasion. She said the "kindergarten" was upstairs but the reading lessons were conducted downstairs. When she entered 1st Grade at Mattie V. Rutherford School, Joan was half a year ahead of other students her age because she had attended Mrs. Bagaley's Kindergarten.
