Hurricane, Search for Life on Mars, alice springs project by Beth Learn [learn/yeats & co]

Hurricane [1994]
Xerox photocomposite, orig. abt 5"x7"; digital prints [1998] abt. 8"x10"

The picture exists as a series of layers or overlays as follows: Layer 1 - Colored xerox of watercolor from Mars' series; Layer 2 - Black/white xerox transparencies of notes [ca 1981] from ongoing contextural analysis of the alice springs text and text from Mars Viking book, and data from eti-bet study reported in Cabaret Vert Magazine 2 [1992].

Note: During the time period in which the notes were written, I was thinking of the language/high energy particle physics analogy in terms of how the energy of word could be measured both in and out of a given context. There was a difference. The mean value for energy per word was less when values were relative to words before and after. This seemed to suggest an intensification or "tightening up" of energy per word in a given context which might vary from context to context.

Hurricane was exhibited in the Member's Wall show in February 1995 at A Space Gallery and in the 2nd Language Show at A Space in October 1995. Hurricane. Appeared on the cover of Peter McPhee's book of poetry, Running Unconscious: The Beginning of Conversation (take one) published by Coach House Books, Toronto.

The Search for Life on Mars was sponsored in part by a Venture Grant from the Ontario Arts' Council for which I am grateful.
