Dancy Terrace or Reddell Street between 9th and 10th, Main and Hubbard Streets, Springfield, Jacksonville, Florida

6th Street, Between Hubbard and Market in
Springfield, Jacksonville, Florida

Joan Thomas left age 5 and Barbara Thomas right
age 4 sitting on the front steps of their house on Sixth Street about 1923.

I found this 6th Street House (2004) unchanged except for the front porch steps which had been moved to the side. My Mother, Joan, was glad when I told her this because she did not like steps that ended right on the sidewalk as those did when she lived there.

The house is still yellow and looks not to have been repainted in the over 80 years since Mother lived there. The house beside it on the corner of 6th and Market is gone but the Church across from that and the Store across from the Church are still there. And the big sycamore tree is still to the side of the porch.

Apparently Grandfather raised prize chickens in that backyard, and the family lived on the first floor while Grandmother let out the second to boarders. Some of the best Jack & Judy stories my Mother told us as children were about experiences she had growing up in this Sixth Street house.

147 Sixth Street now stands between 2 vacant lots on the north side. To the east across Market are the Church and across the street south, Rosie's corner store no longer called Rosie's. Most of the houses across the street are in tact.

The steps to the front porch have been moved to the side. This is good, my Mother says because when they were in front they led directly to the sidewalk and that was too close.

The Thomas family lived on the 1st floor and boarded out the 2nd.
