First Car for the Thomas Family -- DancyT/Redell Street. On 9th Street with their first car: The Thomas Family L-R: Barbara Mae, Harriet Joan and their Mother, Stella DeSha Thomas. Their house is #4 DancyT, in the back, far left. Date: about 1926-27.
Their house was/is also identified as 2107 or 1917 DancyT or Redell Street. But of course, there never was a "street". There was instead a sidewalk down the middle because DancyT was, architecturally speaking, "terrace housing" or "bungalow court housing", a kind of housing developed primarily between 1910 and 1939 in North America..
Seattle, Washington currently has 3 remaining of the original 16 cottages in Belltown at Elliott Way and Vine. There were many such bungalow courts constructed in California. One example would be the fantastic bungalow residence in the film Mulholland Drive. Terrace or bungalow court housing differs from town housing, row housing or tenement housing. It is historically and architecturally significant and merits preservation. Rarely do you find ALL the original units in place and in such good condition considering the abusive treatment they have been subjected to in the last several decades. A new owner is now rennovating DancyT according to preservation standards in Historic Springfield. The work is very high quality and the houses are beautiful.
