The Mattie V. Rutherford School Elementary School (5th & Hubbard)
1940: Another photo taken by Joan Thomas of her 4th Grade students in costume for the class production of Sleeping Beauty.
The Auditorium at Mattie V. was and is just across the main entrance. It looks much today as it did then with a stage across the south end of the large room. Joan, my Mother, remembers how Anneita Morgan helped her with "lighting". Mother said they had to go upstairs through a classromm and into a cloakroom (which the classrooms all had). There on the west wall were little openings where lights at certain times during the production could be shown down onto the stage. "Those were spotlights," I said. "Anneita was showing you how to work the spotlights." Wouldn't it have been a fun thing if you knew about these holes in the wall while you were a student in that classroom. Or maybe a mischeivous thing. |
