Barbara Mae Thomas, about 4 years old, dances in the front yard at 2117 DancyT/Redell Street. Photo taken about 1924. Barbara began dancing very young. When her sister Joan was in Mrs. Bagaley's Kindergarten on 7th Street, Barbara was permitted to participate in the little shows because her/their mother made many costumes for them. Stella Thomas made the wonderful hat Barbara wears here. Eventually Barbara went north to dance with Charles Wiedman, one of the great pioneers of American modern dance. They remained friends until 1975, the year, coincidentally, that they both died in New York City. The photo above forms the center panel of a tryptich I have made, see below.
